Questions we get asked a lot
We are based in Whitchurch, Hampshire and work across the surrounding villages, including Overton, Oakley, St Mary Bourne, Hurstbourne Priors and Longparish. If you are just outside that, give us a call anyway and we will let you know honestly whether we can get to you.
It depends entirely on the job, so we do not quote blind. Smaller work is usually priced by the hour or half day, and anything larger gets a written fixed-price quote before we start. Quotes are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.
The usual guidance is at least every 10 years for an owner-occupied home, every 5 years for a rented property or at each change of tenancy, and every 5 years for most commercial premises. It is also worth having one done before you buy a house, or if you have moved into somewhere and have no paperwork for the wiring.
Yes. In England, privately rented homes must have their fixed wiring inspected and tested at least every 5 years, and you need to give tenants a copy of the report. We can carry out the inspection, give you the report, and quote separately for anything that needs putting right.
No. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work, and it needs to be installed, tested and certificated properly to be safe and to satisfy Building Regulations. It is also the part of your installation that everything else depends on, so it is not the place to save money.
Unplug anything you have recently plugged in, then try resetting the breaker or RCD once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Repeated tripping usually means there is a genuine fault somewhere in the circuit or an appliance, and it is worth finding out which rather than resetting it over and over.
Yes. We will check your incoming supply, earthing arrangement and consumer unit first, then recommend a charge point and a sensible position for it. That survey matters, because the answer for a modern house with a spare way in the board is very different from a 1960s property that needs work first.
Yes. You get the appropriate certificate for the work carried out, along with the test results, and where the work is notifiable it is registered as it should be. Keep the paperwork safe, because buyers, insurers and letting agents all ask for it eventually.
For quotes and planned work we will usually get back to you the same working day and book something in that suits you. If you have no power, a burning smell, or exposed live parts, call rather than email and we will tell you straight away what we can do and what you should switch off in the meantime.
